Volunteer

Generously giving of their time and energy, volunteers are involved in many aspects of Hospice & Palliative Care Partners of Ohio. Our volunteers represent a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. While volunteers do not act in the role of medical professionals, some do have a medical background, which can be helpful. Many of our volunteers have experienced the loss of a loved one and know firsthand the benefits of hospice care.

All HPCPO volunteers go through an application, reference-check and interview process. Once accepted, all volunteers go through an orientation. In addition, those who want to assist patients and families receive special instruction and training. Ongoing training is regularly offered to all volunteers.

Hospice volunteers can assist the patient and family in a number of ways. If you have a specific need that you do not see detailed here, please ask! We specialize in doing little favors. Your hospice social worker will talk to you about how our volunteer service may be able to help with your situation. As your needs change, continue to discuss them with the hospice team. They will work with you to get you the help you need. Here is a partial list of the services that our volunteers normally provide.

In the home, nursing homes, in-patient units and hospitals.
Hospice volunteers visit with the patients, assist with mealtime and recreations, and are there to listen and to care.

In the community.
Hospice volunteers who serve on the speakers’ bureau speak to groups throughout the community about Hospice & Palliative Care Partners of Ohio. Volunteers are a big part of our fund-raising efforts. They take on many projects, such as card-making, sewing and staffing benefit events.

In our office.
We depend on our office volunteers to do a variety of tasks, including computer work, mailings and record keeping.

Special-skill volunteers.
Volunteers with special skills are also available to assist our patients and families. Volunteer attorneys offer limited legal consultation. Spiritual Care volunteers offer counseling and are available to pray with patients and families. Bereavement volunteers offer extra support to families by making phone calls and/or visits for a year following the death of a patient. Volunteer seamstresses take on projects such as sewing hospital gowns and other items for patients.
